The Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB) is investing in upgrades to its testing and metering laboratories as part of preparations for a large-scale smart metering programme across the state. The enhancements are designed to ensure quality assurance and proper validation of meters before deployment to consumers.
Under Phase-1 of the Smart Metering Project, KSEB plans to install 3 lakh smart meters, marking a significant shift toward digitised electricity distribution and consumption tracking. The upgraded facilities will play a critical role in certifying meters that meet technical specifications and performance standards required for the rollout.
The modernisation of testing infrastructure reflects the utility's commitment to implementing advanced metering infrastructure across Kerala's power distribution network. Smart meters are expected to improve billing accuracy, reduce transmission losses, and enable better demand management for the state's electricity consumers.
The initiative aligns with broader efforts across India to transition from conventional mechanical meters to automated digital systems that provide real-time consumption data and enhance operational efficiency in power distribution networks.
