Karen Khachanov booked his spot in the semi-finals of the US Open on Wednesday, progressing through the quarter-finals without completing the match after his opponent Alexander Blockx retired due to injury or illness.
The Russian was in commanding form when Blockx withdrew, having secured the first two sets with convincing margins of 6-2 and 7-5. Khachanov had also broken serve early in the third set, establishing a 3-2 lead before the Belgian decided he could not continue.
While retirements are not uncommon in professional tennis, they often leave questions about an opponent's performance level. Nevertheless, Khachanov will advance with his aggressive play in the opening sets having demonstrated his dominance on the court.
The advancement represents another significant milestone for Khachanov at one of tennis's Grand Slam tournaments. He will face a fresh opponent in the semi-final round, where he will look to maintain the momentum he has built through the earlier stages of the competition.
Blockx's withdrawal marked an early end to his campaign at the US Open, denying fans and both players the opportunity to see the quarter-final contested to its conclusion.
