Khalwat arrests dominate Kelantan syariah enforcement figures

Khalwat, the Islamic legal offence of close proximity between unrelated men and women, remains the primary focus of syariah enforcement authorities in Kelantan, with arrests involving teenagers forming a substantial portion of cases brought before religious courts.

Data on syariah law breaches indicates that khalwat violations represent approximately two-thirds of total arrests handled by enforcement agencies in the northern state. The predominance of such cases reflects ongoing regulatory efforts to uphold Islamic moral standards across Kelantan's communities.

In a notable trend, authorities also recorded 24 cases involving cross-dressing during the reporting period, signalling increased enforcement activity in areas beyond traditional khalwat violations. This expansion of syariah prosecutions demonstrates a broadened approach to monitoring compliance with Islamic legal requirements.

The figures underscore the intensity of syariah law enforcement in Kelantan, where religious authorities maintain active surveillance and prosecution programmes aimed at adherents of Islam. The concentration of khalwat cases, particularly among younger individuals, has prompted continued attention from state religious departments and enforcement bodies seeking to address the persistent nature of such infractions.
