Khyber Group, a diversified ₹650-crore enterprise with interests in cement and hospitality, is positioning itself as a major player in India's aquaculture sector through an aggressive expansion of its trout farming business. The group aims to grow annual revenues from its aquaculture division to ₹38 crore by fiscal year 2027, representing nearly fourfold growth from current levels.
The Ganderbal-based Khyber Aquaculture has already committed ₹112 crore to the venture and plans an additional ₹60 crore investment over the coming years to support expansion. The company operates an eight-acre facility on the banks of the Sindhu River in Akhal, Kangan, and intends to dramatically increase production capacity from the existing 1,200 metric tonnes to between 5,000 and 7,000 metric tonnes within five years, according to Khyber Aquaculture Director Yunus Trumboo.
The group's strategy centers on developing Himalayan trout as a domestic alternative to imported salmon, targeting India's luxury hospitality sector as its primary growth driver. The company plans to engage with chefs through specialized retreats and workshops to build market acceptance among high-end restaurants, hotels and premium retail consumers across the country.
The expansion reflects growing opportunities in India's aquaculture sector as domestic demand for premium seafood products continues to rise among affluent consumers and the hospitality industry.
