The Kidwai Memorial Institute of Oncology has scaled its home-based palliative care services to reach more than 3,000 patients and caregivers, marking a significant expansion of end-of-life care accessibility in the region. The initiative aims to provide compassionate medical support and counselling to individuals managing terminal illnesses within the comfort of their homes, reducing the burden on both patients and healthcare infrastructure.
The programme's core offerings include regular clinical home visits by trained medical professionals, symptom management, and psychological support tailored to individual patient needs. By bringing palliative care services to patients' residences, the institute has enabled families to maintain dignity and normalcy during difficult periods, while ensuring continuous monitoring and intervention when required.
Beyond direct patient care, the Kidwai Institute's initiative places emphasis on bereavement support for families navigating loss and grief following a patient's death. Counselling sessions and support groups provide emotional and practical assistance to bereaved relatives, addressing the multifaceted impact of terminal illness on household members.
The home-based model reflects a broader shift in palliative care delivery across South Asia, where resource constraints and cultural preferences often make hospital-based end-of-life care unsuitable. By demonstrating the viability and positive outcomes of community-centred palliative services, the institute has positioned itself as a leader in accessible, patient-centred care during life's final stages.
