Kim Jong Un lauds 'new-type weapon' after missile tests

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has hailed what state media described as a 'new-type weapon,' signalling continued advancement in the country's military arsenal. The statement came two days after South Korea and Japan detected two short-range ballistic missiles fired into waters off North Korea's eastern coast.

The launches represent the latest in a series of weapons tests conducted by Pyongyang in recent months. North Korea has historically used such demonstrations to showcase technological progress and assert its military capabilities amid ongoing tensions on the Korean peninsula.

South Korean and Japanese defence officials said the missiles were fired from North Korea's western region and travelled over the peninsula before splashing down in the East Sea, known internationally as the Sea of Japan. Both countries' militaries have been monitoring the situation closely.
