Kishan Reddy Questions Nizam's Legacy at Telangana Liberation Day Event

Union Minister G. Kishan Reddy on Thursday questioned the historical legacy of the Nizam during Telangana Liberation Day celebrations organised by the central government, pointing to popular uprisings as proof of the ruler's authoritarian governance.

Addressing the event, Reddy challenged rival parties that have spoken favourably of the Nizam era, asking why figures like Komuram Bheem and Chakali Ailamma had rebelled against his rule if it was as benevolent as claimed. The minister's remarks appeared directed at attempts to lionise the pre-1948 period of Hyderabad State's history.

Reddy alleged that the Congress and the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) have engaged in revisionist history regarding the Nizam's reign to appease certain constituencies and cultivate ties with the AIMIM. He suggested that opposition parties were compromising historical accuracy for political accommodation with the Muslim-dominated party.

Telangana Liberation Day marks September 17, commemorating the state's integration into the Indian union following the police action of 1948, which ended the Nizam's rule. The commemorations remain a point of historical debate, with various political parties offering competing narratives about the pre-merger period and the subsequent formation of Telangana as a separate state in 2014.
