KL's SMART Tunnel: Engineering solution transforms highway into flood defence

Kuala Lumpur's SMART Tunnel serves dual purposes as both a traffic bypass and critical flood mitigation infrastructure. During heavy rainfall, the 6.3-kilometre underground structure transitions from a motorway into a massive stormwater channel protecting the city from inundation.

KL's SMART Tunnel: Engineering solution transforms highway into flood defence

The SMART (Stormwater Management and Road Tunnel) Tunnel, which opened in 2007, represents an innovative engineering approach to addressing two of Kuala Lumpur's persistent urban challenges: traffic congestion and flash flooding. The facility operates as a conventional three-lane highway during normal conditions, allowing motorists to circumvent traffic on the congested southern portions of the city's primary routes.

When heavy rainfall strikes the capital, the tunnel's primary flood management function activates automatically. Traffic is diverted away from the structure through electronic signage and alerts, allowing the tunnel to function as a massive stormwater conduit. The system can channel water from surrounding catchment areas, diverting it safely away from residential and commercial zones that would otherwise face severe inundation.

The dual-function infrastructure incorporates sophisticated monitoring systems that detect rainfall intensity and water accumulation levels. Once predetermined thresholds are reached, the tunnel closes to vehicular traffic within minutes, allowing stormwater management operations to commence. This transition mechanism has proven effective in reducing flood impacts across the city during monsoon seasons and sudden downpours.

Since its completion, the SMART Tunnel has prevented significant flooding across numerous areas in Kuala Lumpur, protecting billions of ringgit in property and infrastructure. The project has become a model for urban planning solutions that address multiple city challenges simultaneously, combining transportation efficiency with environmental protection and public safety considerations.
