Kochi civic body split over vending bunks regulatory status

Kochi Corporation councillors expressed divergent views on the regulatory framework for vending bunks during a council meeting focused on licence renewal procedures. The debate highlighted differing opinions on whether existing vending bunks should be brought under the ambit of the Street Vendors Act, 2014, which governs street vending activities across India.

The disagreement emerged as the civic body considered policy on renewing licences for the bunks, prompting concerns about regulatory consistency and the rights of informal traders operating in the city. Some councillors advocated for formal classification under the Street Vendors Act, while others raised alternative perspectives on implementation.

To address the divisions and seek consensus, Kochi Corporation Mayor Sheela Kumari announced plans for a dedicated meeting with representatives of bunk operators and street vendors associations. The special session aims to understand stakeholder concerns and chart a path forward on regulatory classification and licence renewal terms.

The Street Vendors Act provides for systematic recognition and regulation of street vendors, with provisions for vending zones and licence allocation. The outcome of the proposed discussion could determine how Kochi's informal trading sector is formally structured and regulated going forward.
