Kochi clears 30 urban development projects worth ₹1,500 crore

The Kochi Corporation has given the green light to 30 major urban development projects valued at ₹1,500 crore as part of its long-term Kochi@2050 vision. The approved initiatives span multiple sectors including mobility infrastructure, civic facilities, cultural precincts and waste management systems, aimed at modernising the port city's urban landscape.

The Union government is expected to provide financial support covering 25 percent of the total project cost through a grant mechanism, reducing the financial burden on the civic body. Officials indicated that the projects are designed to enhance the city's operational efficiency, livability and economic competitiveness over the coming decades.

However, the development plan has sparked debate within the corporation council. Opposition councillors have raised concerns about the project selection criteria, arguing that the emphasis on revenue-generating ventures may come at the expense of welfare-oriented initiatives. Critics also flagged the use of land parcels originally earmarked for social welfare programmes, questioning whether the priorities align with the broader needs of Kochi's residents.

The corporation has not yet formally responded to the opposition's objections, though officials are expected to clarify project details and funding arrangements in coming weeks.
