Kochi Corporation moves to take over neglected Parade, Santa Cruz grounds

The Kochi Corporation has initiated steps to assume administrative control of the Parade and Santa Cruz grounds, two of Fort Kochi's most historically significant public spaces. The resolution comes after sustained complaints from residents and heritage enthusiasts about the grounds' deteriorating condition and inadequate maintenance over several years.

Both landmarks hold considerable cultural and historical importance for the coastal city, attracting visitors and serving as gathering spaces for the local community. The Parade Ground and Santa Cruz grounds are recognizable features of Fort Kochi's colonial-era landscape, reflecting the region's diverse heritage.

Currently under the purview of the Revenue Department, the grounds have allegedly suffered from prolonged neglect, prompting the civic body to seek administrative authority. The Corporation argues that transfer of control would enable more effective management and restoration of these public assets.

The move underscores ongoing challenges in heritage site management across Indian cities, where coordination between multiple government departments sometimes hampers maintenance and development efforts. Whether the state government will approve the transfer remains to be seen.
