Kochi Corporation seeks to expand budget canteen scheme across Kerala

The Kochi Corporation has unveiled expansion plans for the Indira Canteen, an initiative aimed at providing subsidized meals to residents at minimal cost. The corporation intends to leverage central government schemes to establish additional outlets across the city, according to civic officials.

The first Indira Canteen unit was inaugurated on March 14, but the launch drew criticism from the opposition Left Democratic Front, which controls the previous municipal council. The LDF alleged that the new scheme was designed to undermine Samridhi@Kochi, a budget eatery brand established during its tenure in 2021.

The Indira Canteen concept, modeled on a successful scheme implemented in other Indian states, aims to ensure food security for economically weaker sections of society. Under the expansion plan, the corporation is exploring integration with various central nutrition and food security programs to enhance reach and sustainability.

Official sources indicate that site identification and logistical planning for additional outlets are underway. The corporation has not disclosed a specific timeline for the rollout, though officials suggest that multiple locations across Kochi could be operational within the coming months.

The initiative reflects an ongoing debate in Kerala municipalities over competing approaches to affordable food distribution, with both ruling and opposition blocs presenting their respective welfare models to constituents.
