The Global Covenant of Mayors (GCoM) brings together more than 14,000 cities and local governments from 150 countries in a coordinated effort to combat climate change and transition to clean energy. With representation from six continents, the alliance encompasses urban centres responsible for significant portions of global emissions and economic activity.
Kochi's elevation to the board marks a significant development for India's representation in global climate governance forums. The city has established itself as a leader in sustainable urban development initiatives, positioning the southern metropolis at the forefront of India's climate commitments at the municipal level.
The appointment reflects the increasing recognition of cities as critical actors in addressing climate change. Local governments play a pivotal role in implementing climate policies, managing urban infrastructure, and engaging citizens in sustainability efforts—responsibilities that have gained prominence as global climate negotiations emphasise the importance of action at all governance levels.
GCoM member cities commit to ambitious climate action plans, including greenhouse gas emissions reductions and adaptation strategies tailored to local contexts. The platform provides a mechanism for urban centres to share best practices, access climate finance, and amplify their influence in international climate discussions alongside national governments.
