Kochi Road Subsidence: Engineers Urge Stronger Subsoil Around Metro Pillars
Engineering experts have identified subsoil strengthening as critical to address road deterioration along Kochi's S.A. Road, where sections near metro construction pillars have sunk significantly. A detailed assessment report is expected to be submitted to municipal authorities this month.

Engineers from the National Institute of Technology Calicut (NIT-C) have completed inspections of the damaged sections of S.A. Road between Manorama Junction and Kadavanthra in Kochi, where progressive subsidence has created hazardous conditions for commuters. The deterioration appears concentrated around the pillars supporting the ongoing metro rail project, prompting concerns about structural integrity and road stability in the high-traffic corridor.
The NIT-C team identified inadequate subsoil reinforcement as a contributing factor to the road's sinking, according to preliminary findings from their site investigations. The experts have recommended measures to strengthen the underlying soil composition in areas adjacent to the metro pillars to prevent further deterioration and ensure long-term stability of the road surface.
The comprehensive technical report detailing the subsidence patterns, underlying causes, and recommended remedial actions is scheduled for submission to the Kochi Corporation before the month's end. Municipal officials are expected to review the findings and determine appropriate action to restore the affected stretches and prevent similar issues from recurring on other sections of the strategic arterial road.
The S.A. Road corridor remains a critical commercial and commuter thoroughfare in Kochi, and ongoing metro construction activities have intensified scrutiny on infrastructure stability in the area. The findings are expected to inform best practices for managing road conditions during large-scale underground construction projects in the city.
