Kochi transport authority plans smart app to curb reckless bus driving

The Kochi Metropolitan Transport Authority (KMTA) is considering implementing a smartphone application to optimize bus schedules and discourage reckless driving among operators in Greater Kochi, according to discussions at a recent authority meeting chaired by the state Transport Minister.

The move comes as officials acknowledged that fixed running times established over 40 years ago have become obsolete. The surge in vehicular traffic and persistent congestion at key junctions across the metropolitan area have rendered traditional scheduling models ineffective, creating pressure on bus operators to maintain unrealistic timelines.

Authority members noted that the exponential growth in vehicles and traffic density since the 1980s has fundamentally altered road conditions. By updating scheduling parameters through a dynamic application, transport officials aim to set realistic route completion times that eliminate the incentive for drivers to exceed speed limits or engage in unsafe practices.

The proposed system would incorporate real-time traffic data to adjust bus schedules adaptively, potentially improving both passenger safety and service reliability. The KMTA is expected to develop specifications for the app in consultation with technology partners and traffic management agencies.

The initiative reflects broader concerns about road safety in Kerala's commercial hub, where rapid urbanization has strained existing transportation infrastructure. Officials believe that evidence-based scheduling could address safety concerns while maintaining service efficiency across the metropolitan region.
