The proprietor of the long-established Cantonese establishment detected inconsistencies in online reviews that led to the unravelling of what appears to be a coordinated blackmail scheme. The discovery has raised fresh concerns about fraud targeting Singapore's hospitality sector.

The owner of Kok Sen Restaurant avoided falling victim to an apparent extortion plot after identifying irregularities in negative reviews posted on Google, according to reports on Tuesday.
The scheme allegedly involved claims that a foreign object had been found in a dish served at the establishment. When the restaurant proprietor investigated the complaint, cross-referencing photographs attached to reviews across multiple platforms, they discovered an identical image appearing in separate posts—a red flag suggesting the accusations were fabricated.
The discovery prompted the owner to reject demands accompanying the initial complaint, effectively foiling what appeared to be a coordinated blackmail operation targeting the restaurant's reputation and financial interests.
The incident underscores vulnerabilities in online review platforms and highlights tactics employed by bad actors seeking to exploit businesses through food contamination hoaxes. Kok Sen, a well-known dining establishment in Singapore's Chinatown precinct, has maintained operations for decades.
Authorities have not made public statements regarding whether a formal investigation has been initiated into the matter.
