Kolkata removes colorful flyover paint after safety concerns emerge

The Kolkata Municipal Corporation has removed decorative paint from the Gariahat and Chingrighata flyovers after the surfaces became a safety hazard for two-wheeler riders. At least three motorcycles skidded on the painted sections, prompting authorities to take swift action and strip the coating from the structures.

The paint had been applied as part of the city's beautification drive ahead of the Durga Puja festival. Urban Development Minister Agnimitra Paul confirmed that anti-skid paint had been used during the initiative, which aimed to enhance the aesthetic appeal of key city landmarks during the major cultural celebration.

The incidents highlighted an unintended consequence of the beautification project, as the painted surfaces reduced tire grip despite the use of anti-skid formulations. The removal of the paint from both flyovers represents a precautionary measure to prevent further accidents and ensure public safety on the busy traffic corridors.

The development underscores the challenges municipalities face when balancing civic beautification with road safety requirements. Authorities are likely to review their approach to future decoration projects to avoid similar complications.
