The six-member Special Investigation Team probing the deadly stampede has zeroed in on critical safety lapses at the temporary structure, with investigators pointing to a single narrow exit point and dimly lit pathways as primary concerns. The October 17 incident at the Chor Bagan pandal resulted in 19 deaths and left dozens injured as crowds surged through the festive venue during Durga Puja celebrations. Preliminary findings suggest that the design and management of the pandal's exit infrastructure failed to meet basic safety standards for handling large congregations. The SIT's examination has revealed that the limited egress route, combined with inadequate illumination in key areas, created conditions that trapped devotees and prevented orderly evacuation when the crush occurred. Investigators are examining whether pandal organizers complied with municipal safety guidelines and whether proper crowd management protocols were implemented during peak visiting hours. The probe is expected to yield recommendations for structural and procedural improvements to prevent similar tragedies at future pandals across the city.
