Koronadal's air quality deteriorates to hazardous levels amid haze alert

Air quality in Koronadal City has deteriorated significantly, with hazardous pollution levels recorded at various times since Tuesday. The Environmental Management Bureau-Region 12 documented PM2.5 Air Quality Index readings reaching 312.8 at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, classifying conditions as both "emergency" and "very unhealthy" for public exposure.

The bureau's specialized air quality monitoring station detected the spike during its ongoing haze watch operations. PM2.5 fine particles, which penetrate deep into the respiratory system, are considered one of the most harmful air pollutants and pose significant health risks at elevated concentrations.

Environmental officials have continued surveillance of atmospheric conditions in the South Cotabato capital as measurements fluctuate. Such pollution episodes typically occur during periods of reduced air circulation and increased particulate matter in the region.

Residents are advised to monitor official air quality updates and take appropriate precautions during peak pollution hours. Health authorities generally recommend limiting outdoor activities and using protective masks when air quality indexes reach hazardous levels.
