Kozhikode Medical College cardiology unit faces critical staff shortage

The cardiology department at Kozhikode Medical College Hospital (MCH) is grappling with a severe staffing crisis that threatens the quality of patient care at the premier institution. Against a sanctioned strength of 14 permanent medical officers, only eight physicians are currently on the rolls, leaving the department functioning at just 57 per cent of authorized capacity.

The situation has been compounded by administrative decisions that have further depleted available resources. One of the eight incumbent cardiologists has been deputed on a working arrangement basis to Government MCH in Wayanad, effectively reducing the functional strength to seven specialists for the high-demand cardiology unit.

The deficit represents a critical gap in Kerala's cardiac care infrastructure, as Kozhikode MCH serves as a tertiary referral centre for a significant portion of North Kerala. Cardiology departments typically handle emergencies, complex surgical cases, and routine interventions that require adequate specialist presence.

The recurring shortage of permanent positions in Kerala's medical colleges has become a systemic issue, with recruitment processes often stalled due to bureaucratic delays and budget constraints. Patient care outcomes and teaching responsibilities at the institution remain under strain due to the persistent vacancy problem.
