Kozhikode to deploy 100 cameras with AI tech to combat traffic violations

Kozhikode is set to expand its traffic enforcement and waste management capabilities through a comprehensive camera surveillance initiative. The civic administration will deploy at least 100 cameras equipped with automatic number plate recognition (ANPR) technology to identify and penalise vehicles violating traffic regulations across the city.

The technology-driven approach aims to enhance compliance with traffic rules by creating an automated system that captures vehicle registration details at violation sites. Officials said the ANPR cameras would be strategically positioned at high-traffic intersections and accident-prone zones to maximise coverage of traffic offences.

Beyond traffic management, authorities have identified approximately 150 locations across Kozhikode where illegal waste dumping has become a persistent problem. Surveillance cameras will be deployed at these hotspots to deter residents and commercial establishments from indiscriminate waste disposal. The move reflects efforts to address environmental concerns linked to improper waste management in the city.

The project is part of a broader civic infrastructure upgrade aimed at improving urban governance through technology. Officials are currently in the preparation phase, with installations expected to begin in phases across identified priority zones.
