Kremlin signals dim prospects for Ukraine peace talks with Trump

The Kremlin said Russian President Vladimir Putin conveyed to Donald Trump that peace negotiations over Ukraine face significant obstacles, with Moscow pointing to aerial attacks on Moscow during last month's election period as a demonstration of hostile intent from Kyiv.

According to the Russian government's account, the drone operations targeting Russian territory undermine any trilateral framework for resolving the ongoing conflict. The attacks, which occurred during Russia's presidential election cycle, were characterized by Moscow as a deliberate attempt to disrupt diplomatic prospects.

The messaging reflects Russia's longstanding position that Ukraine must demonstrate commitment to peace negotiations through actions rather than statements. Moscow has repeatedly cited military operations near its borders as justification for maintaining its military campaign in Ukraine.

The exchange between Putin and Trump comes as international efforts to broker an end to the nearly two-year conflict continue at a standstill. Russia has previously outlined conditions for talks that include territorial concessions from Ukraine and recognition of its control over annexed regions, demands Kyiv has rejected as incompatible with Ukrainian sovereignty.

The Kremlin's latest statements suggest Moscow views the current military and political situation as favoring its negotiating position, with officials indicating little urgency to pursue immediate diplomatic resolution.
