Krishna festival celebrations overshadowed by sexual assault case protest in Kerala

Kannur will witness dueling events on Janmashtami as celebrations for the birth of Lord Krishna coincide with a protest march over an unresolved sexual assault case in Palathayi. The Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI) has announced a 'March for Justice' to demand expedited action in the case, alleging that political considerations are delaying proceedings.
The youth wing of the Communist Party claims that K Padmarajan, a former BJP functionary, has benefited from alleged collusion between the ruling United Democratic Front and the opposition Bharatiya Janata Party. DYFI contends that political connections have shielded the accused from accountability.
Meanwhile, Balagokulam, a cultural organization associated with Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh and BJP circles, will organize its traditional Janmashtami procession featuring children dressed as Krishna and other religious figures. The competing events underscore ongoing tensions between communist and Hindu nationalist organizations in the district.
The dual demonstrations highlight how major cultural and religious occasions in Kerala continue to become focal points for political activism and disputes, particularly when criminal allegations involve prominent figures from major political parties.
