KSRTC to strengthen protections for elderly bus passengers

The Kerala State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) has committed to implementing several measures aimed at ensuring better protection and accommodation for senior citizens using its bus services. During a recent meeting, officials discussed the allocation of 20 percent of seats specifically reserved for elderly passengers, establishing a dedicated space within each vehicle.

To improve enforcement of these reservations, the transport authority plans to enable online booking systems that would allow elderly passengers to secure seats in advance. Additionally, conductors will be empowered to impose fines on those who violate seating protocols by occupying reserved sections, creating accountability for non-compliance.

Beyond seat allocation, KSRTC is considering physical modifications to enhance accessibility for senior citizens. These include reducing the step height at bus entrances to facilitate easier boarding for elderly and mobility-impaired passengers. The corporation is also examining optimal placement of reserved seats within buses to maximize convenience and safety.

The proposed measures reflect growing recognition of mobility challenges faced by India's aging population in public transportation systems. Officials indicate that further discussions will take place to finalize implementation timelines and coordinate logistics across KSRTC's extensive network serving Kerala's commuters.
