KUCHING, Sept 25 — The Kuching Marathon 2026 has been cancelled on short notice due to hazardous air quality from regional haze, organisers announced on Wednesday.
The decision to scrap the race, which was set to take place on Sunday, September 27, was made in light of worsening atmospheric conditions and the associated health risks to participants. Air quality levels in the area had deteriorated significantly in recent days, prompting health and safety concerns.
Event organisers said they prioritised the wellbeing of runners, volunteers, and spectators in making the determination. The decision came less than 48 hours before the scheduled start time.
The cancellation marks another disruption to the annual sporting event, which draws runners from across Malaysia and the broader region. Organisers have not announced a new date for the race at this time.
The haze situation in Sarawak has been a recurring challenge, with air quality periodically reaching unhealthy levels during peak burning seasons in neighbouring Indonesia.
