In recognition of its founder Vice-Chancellor B. Madhusoodana Kurup's contributions, Kufos has unveiled plans for a B. Madhusoodana Kurup Chair for Aquatic Ecosystem Studies at the institution. The endowment forms part of a broader vision to strengthen research and academic excellence in the region.
Among the proposals is the establishment of an empowered Vembanad Lake Authority, to be modelled on the Chilika Development Authority in Odisha. The authority aims to provide more effective governance and management of the ecologically significant Vembanad Lake, which adjoins the university's campus in Kochi.
The university has also proposed a dedicated lake festival to be held alongside the internationally recognised Kochi-Muziris Biennale. The initiative is intended to promote awareness of the lake's ecological and cultural significance while complementing the region's emerging cultural tourism landscape.
Kufos has positioned these initiatives as part of a comprehensive approach to advance environmental stewardship and academic rigour in aquatic ecosystem research, building on the institution's existing strengths in marine and freshwater sciences.
