Kuki group blocks Manipur highway after fresh village attacks

A Kuki militant group has declared a shutdown of a major highway in Manipur in response to attacks on villages, escalating tensions in the conflict-hit northeastern state. The blockade announcement follows renewed clashes between communities that have destabilised parts of the region.

The state government has responded by transferring the Superintendent of Police heading Kamjong district, signalling administrative moves to address security challenges. Kamjong, a strategically located district in the Kuki-majority areas, has been a flashpoint during the recent communal unrest.

The highway closure threatens to disrupt connectivity and supply routes across the state, potentially affecting civilian populations and trade operations. The blockade underscores the fragile security situation persisting in Manipur despite earlier attempts at de-escalation.

The state has deployed additional security personnel in vulnerable areas as tensions remain high between Kuki and Meitei communities. Officials are monitoring the situation closely as both groups remain mobilised across the region.
