Kumalarang launches community college to expand higher education access

KUMALARANG, Zamboanga del Sur — Local government officials in the southern Philippine town of Kumalarang have opened Kumalarang Community College (KCC), a new higher education institution designed to serve students in the region. The college was formally inaugurated on Monday, Aug. 24, according to Mayor Ruel Molina.
The establishment of KCC addresses a critical educational need following the closure of the extension campus of JH Cerilles State University in the area. Molina noted that the community college initiative emerged directly from the need to fill the resulting gap in accessible higher education opportunities for local youth.
The opening of KCC represents a significant step forward for the town's development strategy. By offering tertiary-level programs within the municipality, officials hope to increase enrollment rates among high school graduates while reducing the financial burden on families who previously had to send their children to distant universities.
The college is expected to offer various programs aligned with the region's economic and employment needs, though specific course offerings were not immediately detailed.
