Kumbal Perahera to debut at 2026 Kandy Esala Festival

The Kandy Esala Perahera, one of the world's oldest and most significant Buddhist festivals, will feature a new ceremonial procession when it takes place in 2026. The Kumbal Perahera, making its debut at the ancient festival, will join the established night processions that have drawn pilgrims and visitors to Kandy for centuries.

The Esala Perahera, held annually in July and August, commemorates the Buddha's tooth relic housed at the Sri Dalada Maligawa temple. The festival traditionally comprises multiple processions featuring elaborately caparisoned elephants, elaborate costumes, traditional musicians, and dancers representing Kandy's four principal devales. The addition of the Kumbal Perahera represents an expansion of this centuries-old tradition.

Organisers of the 2026 festival have not disclosed full details regarding the format and composition of the new Kumbal Perahera procession.
