Mendis, who will lead the Sri Lankan Test side at the forthcoming two-match series in Pakistan, brings considerable international experience to the captaincy role. The 27-year-old has featured in 75 Test matches and 343 international appearances across all formats, establishing himself as a key player in the national setup.
The appointment comes following Dhananjaya Silva's resignation from the Test captaincy, creating a vacancy in one of cricket's most demanding leadership positions. Mendis's elevation to captain reflects the Sri Lanka Cricket board's confidence in his ability to guide the team through a crucial phase of international competition.
As captain, Mendis will assume responsibility for leading the national Test squad in their upcoming tour of Pakistan, where they will compete in a two-match series against the hosts. His appointment marks a new chapter in Sri Lankan Test cricket as the team seeks to strengthen its performance in the longest format of the game.
