L&T wins initial approval for 1,600 MW thermal plant in Jharkhand

Larsen & Toubro (L&T) has secured initial approval to build the primary infrastructure of a 1,600 megawatt thermal power generation facility in Jharkhand, marking a significant milestone for the power sector initiative in the eastern state.

The project is being developed as a collaborative effort between Damodar Valley Corporation (DVC), a statutory authority under the Ministry of Power, and Coal India Limited (CIL), the nation's primary coal producer. The joint venture structure brings together operational expertise in power generation and assured coal supply.

L&T's selection to construct the main components of the thermal plant represents confidence in the company's engineering and execution capabilities in large-scale power infrastructure projects. The preliminary nod sets the stage for detailed engineering and procurement activities to commence.

Thermal power plants remain a substantial portion of India's energy generation capacity, and projects in resource-rich states like Jharkhand leverage local coal reserves to support the nation's growing electricity demand. The 1,600 MW facility is expected to contribute to regional power availability and economic development in the state.

Further regulatory approvals and environmental clearances would typically be required before construction activities begin at the site.
