Labor Department halts operations of six ferry vessels after deadly ship fire

MANILA — The Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) has issued an indefinite work stoppage order affecting six vessels belonging to Atienza Interisland Ferries in response to the catastrophic maritime incident that claimed multiple lives.

The suspension was triggered by the September 9 fire that engulfed the MV June Aster while operating off the coast of Coron in Palawan province. The passenger-cargo vessel was carrying residents and tourists when the blaze broke out, resulting in a major maritime disaster that drew national attention.

Documents made available to media outlets indicate the labor department determined that suspension of operations was warranted based on their investigation into the incident and the firm's safety practices. The action represents one of the most stringent responses by regulatory authorities to a maritime accident in recent years.

Atienza Interisland Ferries, which operates ferry services throughout the Philippine archipelago, has not yet issued a public statement regarding the suspension or timeline for resuming operations. The DOLE suspension remains in effect pending further review of the company's safety protocols and vessel conditions.
