Labour Ministry to Expand Health Coverage, Raise Reimbursement Limits

The labour ministry has announced plans to overhaul its employee welfare scheme with significantly improved medical benefits, addressing gaps in coverage for expensive treatments. The revamp includes raising reimbursement limits for heart and kidney treatments, two conditions that often impose substantial financial burdens on workers and their families.

Dialysis coverage will be added to the scheme for the first time, providing relief to patients requiring regular treatment for kidney failure. This inclusion marks a substantial expansion in the scope of supported medical procedures under the existing welfare framework.

Beyond expanding treatment coverage, the ministry is modernizing the scheme's infrastructure through digital innovation. The proposal includes introducing QR-enabled health cards that would streamline access to benefits and reduce administrative friction. Digital medical records will also be integrated into the system, enabling better coordination between healthcare providers and faster claim processing.

These enhancements are expected to strengthen the social security net for India's organised sector workforce while promoting efficiency in benefit delivery. The digital components are particularly aimed at reducing documentation burdens and improving transparency in the reimbursement process.

The revised scheme is expected to benefit millions of workers covered under the ministry's welfare programs once the rollout begins.
