MANILA — Senator Panfilo "Ping" Lacson dismissed widespread reports suggesting that Senator Loren Legarda is pursuing asylum as unfounded, labeling the claims as fake news during a Saturday briefing.
"Those are false reports, not true," Lacson said, addressing the speculation surrounding Legarda, who is presently on medical leave from her Senate duties.
Lacson further noted that Legarda currently faces no legal cases that would necessitate such action. "She doesn't have any case yet, and I don't think there's any preliminary investigation against her," he explained.
The senator's remarks came as various reports circulated on social media and news outlets speculating about Legarda's status. Lacson's statement appears aimed at clarifying her situation and countering the viral misinformation.
Legarda, a veteran lawmaker and environmental advocate, has been serving in the Senate for multiple terms. Her medical leave comes as she continues her recovery, according to available information.
