Ladakh achieves India's first fully organic Union Territory status

Ladakh has achieved a historic distinction by becoming India's first fully organic Union Territory, according to an announcement by Lieutenant Governor V K Saxena on Sunday. The declaration represents a culmination of the territorial administration's commitment to environmentally sustainable agricultural practices in one of the country's most ecologically sensitive regions.

The achievement follows a major policy decision in July when the Lt Governor issued a complete prohibition on the procurement, distribution, sale, marketing and use of chemical and synthetic fertilisers across Ladakh. The sweeping ban was designed to protect the region's fragile Himalayan ecosystem while promoting traditional farming methods suited to the area's unique geography.

According to the Lt Governor, the transition to organic farming demonstrates that environmentally responsible agriculture can thrive even in challenging geographical conditions. The administration has supported this shift through various initiatives, including the distribution of organic produce and inputs to farmers since March.

The move is intended to preserve Ladakh's traditional agricultural heritage while simultaneously improving farmer livelihoods and maintaining the ecological integrity of the high-altitude region. Officials describe the organic status as not merely an administrative milestone but a long-term commitment to sustainable development in the Union Territory.
