Ladakh creates eighth district with Sankoo carved from Kargil

Ladakh has expanded its administrative structure with the creation of Sankoo as its eighth district, a significant reorganization that reflects efforts to improve governance and service delivery across the union territory. The new district has been carved out of the existing Kargil district, a move aimed at bringing administrative facilities closer to residents in the region.

Sankoo district will comprise three tehsils: GM Pore, TSG, and Taisuru. The establishment of these administrative divisions is expected to streamline local governance and enhance the delivery of public services to communities in the area. The creation of the new district marks a substantial shift in Ladakh's administrative boundaries since its separation from Jammu and Kashmir in 2019.

Beyond the formation of Sankoo district, the union territory administration has announced the creation of five additional tehsils across Ladakh. These new tehsil divisions are intended to strengthen administrative oversight and ensure more responsive local governance in various parts of the region.

The reorganization represents Ladakh's ongoing efforts to optimize its administrative framework following its elevation to union territory status. Officials indicated that the measures would facilitate better coordination between district and regional administration, ultimately benefiting residents through improved access to government services and development initiatives.
