Ladakh gears up for panchayat and municipal elections on November 21

Ladakh's Chief Secretary has initiated a comprehensive review of electoral readiness ahead of the region's panchayat and municipal elections set for November 21, officials said. The elections represent a significant democratic exercise for the union territory, combining grassroots village council contests with municipal corporation votes in its two major cities.

The panchayat elections will span 193 constituencies across Ladakh, with the entire polling process expected to conclude by November 30. The staggered schedule aims to ensure smooth conduct of elections while allowing adequate time for administrative oversight and security arrangements across the geographically dispersed region.

Simultaneously, municipal elections will be held in Leh and Kargil, bringing local governance to the fore in both districts. The dual electoral exercise reflects efforts to strengthen democratic institutions at the grassroots and municipal levels following Ladakh's transition to union territory status in 2019.

The Chief Secretary's review is intended to assess ground-level preparations, including polling infrastructure, security arrangements, and voter facilitation mechanisms. Officials are expected to coordinate with election authorities to address logistical challenges specific to Ladakh's remote terrain and harsh climatic conditions during the election period.
