Ladakh set to gain High Court bench following presidential notification

The regulation, officially titled 'The Union Territory of Ladakh (Sitting of the Bench of the High Court of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh in Ladakh) Regulation, 2026,' was promulgated by President Murmu on August 27 and published in the Gazette of India Extraordinary the same day. The Ministry of Law and Justice issued the regulation to address the geographical challenges faced by Ladakh residents in accessing higher judicial forums.

The establishment of the High Court bench fulfils a longstanding aspiration of Ladakh's population, who have faced significant hardship in pursuing legal remedies at the appellate level due to the region's remote location. By bringing judicial services within the union territory, the bench is expected to improve access to justice and reduce travel burdens on litigants and legal professionals alike.

Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena welcomed the development, noting that the presidential notification was issued within seven days of the Union Cabinet's approval. He underscored the administration's commitment to implementing decisions swiftly to benefit Ladakh's citizens. The rapid implementation reflects the government's prioritisation of establishing institutional infrastructure in the newly formed union territory.
