Laguna de Bay water levels fall as algal bloom risks loom

LUCENA CITY — Water levels at Laguna de Bay declined to 12.39 meters on Tuesday morning, down from a critical peak of 12.50 meters reached the previous week, according to the Laguna Lake Development Authority (LLDA). The measurement was taken at 10 a.m. as the lake continues its seasonal fluctuation cycle.

Despite the recent decline, the LLDA has issued warnings about emerging environmental hazards, particularly the risk of harmful algal blooms and widespread fish kills. Such phenomena are common in the lake during transition periods and can devastate local fishing communities that depend on Laguna de Bay for their livelihoods.

The LLDA continues to monitor water conditions across the country's second-largest freshwater lake. The agency's advisory comes amid growing concerns about the lake's ecological health, which has been strained by pollution, overfishing, and climate-related weather patterns that have caused erratic water level swings in recent years.

Local authorities have advised residents and fishermen to remain vigilant and report any unusual water discoloration or fish mortality events to the LLDA immediately.
