Lakshadweep achieves universal literacy milestone under ULLAS scheme

Lakshadweep has attained 100 percent literacy status, becoming the first Union Territory to achieve universal literacy across its population. The milestone was reached after all eligible learners in the archipelago cleared the Foundational Literacy and Numeracy Assessment Test, according to the Education department.

The accomplishment was achieved under the Pradhan Mantri Rashtriya Bal Swachhtrata Mission (PM SHRI) and the Unified Learning Platform for Learners As Saakshi (ULLAS), a centrally sponsored scheme designed to enhance foundational skills among learners. The assessment framework evaluates competency in basic literacy and numeracy across multiple age groups.

Lakshadweep's success underscores the effectiveness of targeted educational interventions in smaller administrative units. The Union Territory, comprising 36 islands with a population of approximately 65,000, has historically maintained relatively high literacy rates compared to national averages.

The achievement reflects the education department's comprehensive approach to ensuring every eligible learner meets minimum proficiency standards in foundational skills. This development sets a benchmark for other regions pursuing universal literacy objectives across India.
