MARAWI CITY — Agricultural officials in Lanao del Sur have launched a climate adaptation initiative targeting rice farming communities in Maguing and Poona Bayabao municipalities. The Provincial Government, acting through its Office of the Provincial Agriculturist, conducted the training program to equip approximately 200 local farmers with techniques for improving yields while managing climate-related challenges.
The program emphasized production enhancement strategies alongside climate resilience measures, with particular focus on mitigating the effects of El Niño weather patterns that have threatened regional harvests. Participants received technical instruction on implementing sustainable farming methods suited to changing rainfall patterns and temperature fluctuations.
Farmers completing the program also received fertilizer assistance to support implementation of the techniques learned. Officials indicated the initiative reflects a broader effort to strengthen the agricultural sector's capacity to withstand climate variability while maintaining food security across the province.
The training represents part of a coordinated response by provincial authorities to enhance farmer livelihoods while addressing environmental pressures affecting rice production in Mindanao.
