Land surveyor accused of caste-based threats in Uttar Pradesh district

A revenue official in Uttar Pradesh's Hardoi district has been accused of intimidating a youth by inquiring about his caste and threatening legal action under the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act during a routine land survey.

The alleged incident occurred when the lekhpal, or revenue clerk, was conducting a land measurement survey. According to reports, the official questioned the youth about his caste before allegedly warning him of SC-ST Act provisions. The encounter was recorded and subsequently circulated on social media, drawing attention from Brahmin organizations in the region, which raised objections to the alleged conduct.

Following the video's circulation, the district administration initiated an inquiry into the matter. The Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) characterized the purported remarks as inappropriate, while the lekhpal involved has denied making any threats. The administration has tasked the tahsildar with investigating the case and directed a report within two days.

The incident underscores ongoing sensitivities around caste-based interactions in official settings across India's heartland districts. Officials have indicated that appropriate action will be taken based on the inquiry's findings.
