Land Trust Secures 200 Acres Near US Reservoir; More Land At Risk
A conservation organisation in North Carolina has completed its first major land acquisition as part of an effort to protect public access to natural spaces near Tuckertown Reservoir. The purchase, backed by over 1,400 supporters, leaves nearly 3,800 acres still vulnerable to development.

The Three Rivers Land Trust has acquired 200 acres of land adjacent to Tuckertown Reservoir in North Carolina, marking a significant milestone in its Save Tuckertown campaign. The acquisition was made possible through support from more than 1,400 individual contributors and outdoor industry partners who recognised the ecological and recreational value of the area.
The newly protected land will ensure continued public access to the reservoir and surrounding natural spaces, providing opportunities for outdoor recreation and conservation. The initiative reflects growing efforts by environmental groups across North America to preserve undeveloped land as urban expansion threatens rural and wilderness areas.
Despite this achievement, the land trust has warned that the work is far from complete. Approximately 3,800 acres in the broader Tuckertown area remain at risk of commercial development, prompting the trust to launch an expanded campaign to acquire additional properties. The organisation has indicated that securing these remaining parcels will require sustained funding and community engagement.
The three-state region served by the land trust has seen increasing pressure on natural spaces over recent years, making conservation efforts increasingly urgent. The successful Tuckertown campaign serves as a blueprint for similar initiatives aimed at protecting watersheds and recreational lands across the southeastern United States.
