Landslide alerts issued for western districts as weather threatens stability

The National Building Research Organisation (NBRO) issued landslide early warnings for several vulnerable areas in the Colombo, Kalutara, and Kegalle districts on Friday morning, citing heightened geological risk from prevailing weather patterns.
The alerts, issued at 10:00 a.m. on September 15, will remain active until 10:00 a.m. on September 16, covering a full 24-hour monitoring period. The warnings represent a Level 1 precautionary measure, classified as Yellow status under the organisation's alert system.
Residents and local authorities in the affected districts have been advised to remain vigilant and monitor weather updates closely. The NBRO continues to track atmospheric conditions and geological stability across the region.
The organisation regularly issues such warnings during periods of heavy rainfall or unstable weather, when soil saturation increases the risk of slope failures in hilly and mountainous terrain. Authorities have advised communities in at-risk areas to avoid unnecessary travel in vulnerable zones and to prepare emergency evacuation procedures where applicable.
