BAGUIO CITY — The Baguio-Bontoc Road, a critical transport artery linking Benguet and Mountain Province, was closed to all traffic Thursday after a landslide blocked the thoroughfare in Sitio Tiktik, Barangay Bontoc Ili in Bontoc town.
The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) Mountain Province 1st District Engineering Office confirmed the closure in a situational report issued Thursday afternoon. The agency did not immediately specify the extent of damage or provide estimates for road clearing operations.
The road closure is expected to significantly impact travel between the two provinces, affecting both commercial and private transport. The DPWH advised motorists and transport operators to use alternative routes pending the completion of repairs and debris removal.
Mountain Province has experienced frequent landslides during the rainy season, with the Baguio-Bontoc Road proving particularly vulnerable to such incidents. Engineers were expected to assess the damage and begin remedial work once weather conditions permit.
