The National Building Research Organisation (NBRO) has activated landslide early warning systems across several districts in response to ongoing heavy rainfall affecting the island. The alerts, which categorise risk levels from yellow to amber, will remain in force until 11.00 p.m. today.
Areas designated as Level 2 – Be Alert status have been placed under amber warning protocols, indicating heightened risk conditions that require immediate attention from residents and authorities. Simultaneously, Level 1 – Remain Vigilant classifications have triggered yellow warnings in other zones, urging communities to exercise caution and monitor weather developments closely.
Residents in affected districts have been advised to avoid venturing into landslide-prone areas and to heed instructions from local disaster management authorities. The NBRO continues to monitor rainfall patterns and ground conditions to assess whether warnings will be extended beyond the scheduled expiration time.
Seasons of heavy precipitation have historically triggered landslide incidents across Sri Lanka's western and southwestern regions, necessitating coordinated response efforts between the NBRO, local government bodies, and emergency services. Families in vulnerable locations are encouraged to remain prepared for potential evacuation if conditions deteriorate.
