Langkawi MP urges tax autonomy to fund island development

Langkawi MP Suhaimi Abdullah has called for the island to be granted autonomy over taxation, arguing the measure would enable more rapid financing of local development initiatives. Under such an arrangement, Langkawi would retain greater control over tax revenues generated within its jurisdiction, potentially streamlining project implementation without waiting for federal fund releases.

The proposal reflects concerns about development timelines on the popular tourist destination, which has historically relied on federal allocations for major infrastructure upgrades. Suhaimi's suggestion points to a model where island authorities could mobilise resources more efficiently to meet local priorities.

The call for increased fiscal authority comes amid broader discussions about decentralising budgetary powers within Malaysian governance structures. Should such autonomy be granted, Langkawi could potentially direct revenues toward tourism infrastructure, transportation networks, and other development priorities identified by local stakeholders.

The proposal would require coordination between federal and state authorities to establish appropriate tax frameworks and accountability mechanisms. Officials have not yet formally responded to Suhaimi's suggestion for restructuring Langkawi's fiscal arrangements.
