The Laoag City government is ramping up contingency preparations as the region braces for the effects of Super El Niño, which meteorologists project will impact the area through March 2027. The city administration has outlined a comprehensive assistance framework targeting farmers, fisherfolk, and transport workers most vulnerable to drought and climate disruptions.
Mayor James Bryan Alcid has mobilized heads of various local government offices to coordinate the response strategy, according to a statement released by the Laoag City Government Information, Communications and Media Office on Sunday. The multi-sectoral approach aims to ensure vulnerable communities have adequate support mechanisms in place before the weather pattern intensifies.
The Super El Niño phenomenon typically brings prolonged dry conditions across the Philippines, threatening agricultural output and fishing activities while disrupting livelihoods dependent on transportation. By initiating preparations ahead of peak impact months, Laoag City officials hope to mitigate economic hardship and food security risks in the region.
The city government's preemptive stance reflects growing recognition of climate-related risks facing northern Luzon communities, with officials prioritizing coordination among agencies to streamline relief distribution and resource allocation during the anticipated weather crisis.
