Laos has emerged as a crucial energy exporter for Southeast Asia, with electricity sales representing a significant revenue stream for the economically developing nation. In 2023, approximately two-thirds of the country's total electricity generation was exported to regional markets, reflecting Laos's strategic position as the region's primary power supplier.
The hydropower-dependent nation has leveraged its abundant water resources and geographic location to establish itself as the 'battery of Southeast Asia.' Major dam projects and hydroelectric facilities generate substantial volumes of electricity destined for neighbouring Thailand, Vietnam, and Cambodia, making energy exports a cornerstone of Laos's foreign exchange earnings.
However, the heavy emphasis on electricity exports for revenue has created a paradox for the landlocked country. Domestic power shortages persist despite Laos's position as a major regional electricity producer, raising questions about resource allocation and domestic infrastructure development priorities.
The export-focused energy model reflects Laos's broader economic strategy to monetise its natural resources while facing limited alternative revenue sources.
