MANILA – Senator-judge Lito Lapid spoke for the first time during Monday's impeachment trial of Vice President Sara Duterte, directly addressing testimony from a witness about the alleged distribution of confidential funds.
During questioning of former Special Disbursing Officer Gina Acosta on Day 17 of the proceedings, Lapid sought clarification on whether it had been confirmed that a person named "Lapid" had received such funds. The senator-judge indicated he would be grateful to the defense if evidence could be provided showing a relative of his had received the alleged payments.
Lapid's intervention marked a significant moment in the ongoing trial, as the senator-judge had remained largely silent during previous sessions. His direct questioning of the witness suggested an effort to address allegations that may have implications for his family or name.
